Sustainable, Smart and Biodegradable Packaging Using Herbal Products: A Critical Review of Bioactive Formulation Strategies, Functional Performance and Environmental Prospects

Abstract
The environmental burden associated with petrochemical-based food packaging has intensified the search for renewable alternatives capable of matching, or exceeding, the functional performance of conventional plastics. Herbal products, encompassing essential oils, polyphenols, anthocyanins, curcuminoids, mucilages and plant-derived polysaccharide nanomaterials, have emerged as multifunctional additives capable of conferring antimicrobial, antioxidant and colour-responsive properties on biodegradable packaging matrices. This review critically synthesises recent literature on herbal-product-enabled sustainable, smart and biodegradable packaging, tracing the underlying phytochemistry, the polymer matrices most compatible with herbal incorporation, and the mechanisms by which such systems extend food shelf life while simultaneously reporting freshness status through visible colour change. Particular attention is given to the trade-offs between functional enhancement and mechanical or barrier performance, the biodegradation behaviour of herbal-loaded films under composting and soil conditions, and the life-cycle implications of substituting synthetic polymers with plant-derived matrices and additives. The review also considers the industrial, regulatory and consumer-acceptance barriers that currently limit the translation of laboratory-scale formulations into commercial packaging products. The evidence indicates that herbal bioactives can substantially improve the functional value of biodegradable films, yet inconsistent testing protocols, limited long-term stability data and unresolved end-of-life trade-offs continue to hinder standardisation and scale-up. The review closes by identifying priority research directions, including harmonised biodegradation testing, cost-effective extraction routes and integrated life-cycle assessment frameworks, that would support the transition of herbal-based smart packaging from an active research niche to a mainstream sustainable packaging technology.
