Abstract

The present study was conducted in 2025 at Dr. NTR College of Agricultural Engineering, Bapatla, Andhra Pradesh, to characterise BPT 2766 paddy seeds and obtain engineering parameters for precision planter development. The physical and mechanical properties of seeds are important for the design of precision seed-metering and handling systems. Seed dimensions, geometric properties, density, porosity, thousand-seed weight, angle of repose, coefficient of static friction and moisture content were determined using standard procedures. The average seed length, width and thickness were 7.77, 1.96 and 1.70 mm, respectively, with a geometric mean diameter of 2.95 mm. Sphericity and aspect ratio were 37.73 and 25.23%, while bulk density, true density and porosity were 493.52 kg m⁻³, 1053.93 kg m⁻³ and 52.88%, respectively. The thousand-seed weight and angle of repose were 14.32 g and 27.23°, respectively. Static friction varied from 0.36 to 0.53 across the tested surfaces, and moisture content was 10.40% (dry basis). The results provide essential engineering data for the design of seed-metering, hopper and seed-flow components for BPT 2766 paddy.
