Abstract
Medical entomology and vector control are disciplines that focus on the study and management of insects and arthropods that impact human health. This book offers a comprehensive overview of the medically significant insect and arthropod taxa focusing on their roles as vectors of infectious diseases, sources of venom and allergens. Key insect vectors such as mosquitoes, sandflies, blackflies, fleas, lice, tsetse flies, Flies (House flies, Flesh flies, Bot flies), and Cockroaches are explored in depth, emphasizing their life cycles, disease transmission mechanisms, and public health implications. Arachnids like ticks, mites, spiders, scorpions, cyclops, crabs, and crayfish are also discussed due to their medical significance. The book distinguishes between biological and mechanical disease transmission, providing insight into vector pathogen-host interactions and how these relationships influence disease spread. Special attention is given to integrated vector management (IVM), modern control strategies including genetic modification, and the influence of environmental changes. It underscores the importance of taxonomy, molecular tools, and community engagement in vector identification and control efforts.
