Abstract

Acid-base balance is one of the most demanding and finely regulated control systems of the internal environment in living organisms. In addition to adequate tissue and cellular oxygenation, a proper acid-base status is critical for the metabolic functioning of cellular machinery. Deviations from this state lead to dysfunction and death of cells, tissues, organs, and systems within the human body. Therefore, an understanding of acid-base physiology is crucial for healthcare providers who treat patients with acid-base disorders. This is the objective of this book.

Keywords: Acid-base status, control system, acidity, cellular function, acid-base disturbances
